EAA powder vs capsules, and flavors

The amino acids are the same in any form. What changes is how many grams you can comfortably get in, what else comes with them, and whether you will put up with the taste.

Short answer

Powder is the easy way to reach a study-sized dose of several grams, and comes flavored or unflavored. Capsules and tablets are tasteless and portable, but capsule servings are usually small, so a dose of 5 g or more can mean many pills. Unflavored EAAs taste bitter; flavored ones add sweeteners, acids and sometimes caffeine.

Example: one tablet product lists a 5 g blend per 5 tablets (PerfectAmino listing), while one powder lists 8 g of EAAs per 11 g scoop (Nutricost listing). To match a 15 g daily dose used in studies, you would need many tablets or about two scoops.

Mixing tips

  1. Liquid first

Pour 8 to 16 oz of cold water or juice into a shaker before the powder.

  2. Add the scoop

Level the scoop. A heaped scoop can be a gram or more over the label serving.

  3. Shake hard

Free-form amino acids clump. A shaker with a mixing ball helps.

  4. Drink it fresh

Some amino acids settle; swirl as you sip.

Questions people ask

Are EAA capsules as good as powder?

The amino acids are the same. The difference is dose: capsule servings usually deliver fewer grams, so you need many capsules to match a scoop of powder.

Why do unflavored EAAs taste so bad?

Several amino acids taste bitter, and free-form amino acids do not dissolve well. Mixing into juice or a smoothie, or choosing a flavored version, makes them easier to drink.

What sweeteners do flavored EAAs use?

Common ones include sucralose, acesulfame potassium and stevia. Labels list them under other ingredients.

Do EAA tablets dissolve properly?

Tablets are made to break down in the gut; whether a specific product does so well is not something we have tested. Follow the label and take tablets with water.
