How to read an EAA label

The front of the tub sells. The supplement facts panel tells. Six checks take about three minutes and work on any brand.

Short answer

On the supplement facts panel, count the nine essential amino acids, find the total EAA grams per serving (not the scoop weight), check the leucine amount, see whether BCAAs dominate the total, read the other ingredients for sweeteners and caffeine, and look up any certification in the program database.

The six checks

  1. Count the nine

Histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, valine. Some products list eight; some add non-essential amino acids such as tyrosine.

  2. Find total EAAs per serving

Use the EAA total or add up the nine. Compare with study doses of about 6.7 to 18 g.

  3. Check leucine

The ISSN suggests per-serving protein doses provide about 700 to 3000 mg of leucine with the other EAAs.

  4. See how much is BCAA

If leucine, isoleucine and valine make up most of the total, the other six are small amounts.

  5. Read other ingredients

Sweeteners, acids, colors, caffeine and electrolytes all live here.

  6. Verify certifications

Search the NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport database for the exact product and flavor.

A worked example

One listing shows a powder with 8 g of EAAs per 11 g scoop (Nutricost listing):

Reading one real panel

Line on the panelAmountWhat it tells you
2:1:1 BCAA6,000 mg75% of the EAA total is BCAAs
L-Leucine (within the BCAAs)about 3,000 mgWithin the ISSN leucine range
L-Lysine800 mg
L-Threonine690 mg
L-Phenylalanine350 mg
L-Histidine100 mgSmall
L-Tryptophan50 mgSmall, which is typical
L-Methionine10 mgVery small

That panel lists all nine and a solid leucine dose, built mostly from BCAAs. Whether that matters to you depends on the rest of your diet. Compare with Thorne Amino Complex, which shows 1.25 g leucine per scoop (Thorne).

Questions people ask

What is a proprietary blend on an EAA label?

A blend that lists ingredients but only the total weight, not each amount. You cannot tell how much leucine or any single amino acid you get.

Why is the scoop weight bigger than the EAA amount?

The scoop includes flavors, acids, sweeteners, flow agents and sometimes electrolytes or caffeine. Only the amino acid lines count toward your EAA dose.

What does 2:1:1 mean on an EAA label?

It is the ratio of leucine to isoleucine to valine, the three BCAAs. A 2:1:1 base with 6 g means 3 g leucine and 1.5 g each of the other two.

Do EAA labels include non-essential amino acids?

Some do, such as tyrosine or cystine, often in the same panel. Count only the nine essentials when comparing EAA doses.
