Short answer
Whey is a complete protein that contains all nine EAAs, and about 43% of whey protein is essential amino acids (Gorissen 2018). EAAs are only the essentials, so a smaller scoop with fewer calories delivers a similar EAA dose. Research suggests both raise muscle protein synthesis. Whey is usually the simpler, cheaper way to hit daily protein; EAAs suit low-calorie, dairy-free or sip-during-training use.
Side by side
EAA powder vs whey protein
| EAA powder | Whey protein | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The 9 essential amino acids as free amino acids | A complete milk protein: all 20 amino acids |
| EAA share | 100% | About 43% of the protein (Gorissen 2018) |
| Typical serving | A few grams to about 15 g | About 20 to 40 g of protein |
| Calories | Lower per serving | Higher per serving |
| Dairy | Dairy free | Yes, from milk |
| Taste | Bitter unless flavored | Mild, mixes like a shake |
What the research suggests
- Both deliver the active part. The ISSN position stand says rapidly digested proteins high in EAAs and leucine are most effective at stimulating muscle protein synthesis, and that whole food proteins containing all EAAs are a good base (ISSN 2017).
- Essential amino acids carry the effect. In older adults, 18 g of EAAs matched 40 g of mixed amino acids on muscle protein balance (Volpi 2003).
- Per gram, EAA blends can be more anabolic in short tests. One study found 6.3 g and 12.6 g of an EAA plus whey blend gave a larger whole-body anabolic response per gram than a whey-based recovery drink, and the response rose with dose (Park 2020). The blend was proprietary and authors disclosed a patent application, so read it as early, industry-linked evidence.
- Total protein still rules. For muscle size over time, total daily protein predicted results more than timing did (Schoenfeld 2013).
When each makes sense
Whey fits when
- You want to reach a daily protein target simply.
- You like a shake and do not mind the calories.
- Cost per gram of protein matters. Browse whey isolate.
EAAs fit when
- You want the essential amino acids with fewer calories, for example while dieting.
- You want a light drink to sip during long training.
- You avoid dairy or feel heavy after shakes.
- Appetite is low and a big shake is hard to finish, a common situation for older adults.
Questions people ask
Can EAAs replace protein powder?
They can replace a protein shake as a source of essential amino acids, but not as a source of total protein or calories. If your goal is reaching a daily protein target, whey or food is usually simpler.
Are EAAs absorbed faster than whey?
EAA supplements are free amino acids, so they need no digestion and blood levels rise quickly. Whey is also digested quickly. Whether faster absorption changes long-term results is not established.
Is it worth taking EAAs with whey?
One industry-linked study found an EAA plus whey blend produced a larger short-term anabolic response per gram than a whey-based recovery drink. That is a single acute study; for most people, enough total protein matters more.
Which is better for someone who is lactose intolerant?
EAA powders contain no dairy, so they avoid lactose. Whey isolate is low in lactose and suits many people, but not everyone.
